The problem that walks in on the first call usually has no name yet. You know this part is slow, that part goes wrong often, and the money you spent last time fixed none of it. Separate them one by one and they all land on the same decision, and that decision opens into five ways forward.
The step before the map
Know what you are measuring before you decide to fix, build, or buy
Before making anything run itself, or handing work to an AI agent, two questions have to be answered. The first is which number this is being measured by. The second is whether that number already has data behind it. If neither can be answered, what you build will run, but nobody will be able to say whether it was worth it. So we start by setting up reporting and business metrics that match the business goal, and only then go into the five lanes.
Not being able to answer is no failure. It means it is not time to build yet.
